Unbundling parental loneliness: Specific diagnoses for effective treatment

Roughly two-thirds of parents report feeling lonely, and research shows a parent’s loneliness can predict their child’s loneliness decades later.

Yet most responses to the overall loneliness epidemic treat it as one condition with one cure: more connection. For many parents, that isn’t what’s missing. In fact, telling a lonely parent to join a support group may not solve the problem.

In this new report, “Unbundling parental loneliness,” Ann Somers Hogg, director of health care research, uses Jobs to Be Done Theory to uncover what actually moves parents out of loneliness.

Drawing on in-depth interviews with mothers and fathers across the US who had recently emerged from chronic loneliness, she finds that “I’m lonely” means at least five different things. Some stem from a lack of social connection. Others have surprisingly little to do with other people and stem from a loss of identity. Each calls for a different solution, which helps explain why a one-size-fits-all approach so often fits only a few.

Download the report to explore the five Jobs, what parents “hired” to make progress on each, and where AI helped and where it fell short. You’ll also find practical tools for those positioned to help: design criteria for social entrepreneurs (download below), a five-question screener that physicians and counselors can use in practice (download below), and guidance for community leaders.

Parental loneliness can be solved, once we know which kind we’re treating.
