School Description
Midway Elementary School is a public school in Highline School District that serves students in grades K through 6 in Des Moines, Wash. It has a high percentage of students who are English language learners and/or qualify for free and reduced-price meals. It was one of two Highline schools selected to help develop a blended-learning model that can be scaled up in schools across the Puget Sound region. The Puget Sound Educational Service District (PSESD) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are helping to sponsor the work. The two schools will work closely with four other schools in King and Pierce Counties to identify best practices for blended learning models.

Program Model
Program model: Station Rotation
Model description
For math and reading, students rotate at the teacher’s discretion between online learning and small-group, face-to-face instruction. Teachers provide some individualized instruction to students depending on the student’s skill level.
The students’ schedule for using online instruction is differentiated by day. On Mondays and Tuesdays, students spend 20 minutes using Reflex Math and then 40 minutes using one of the online reading content providers; on Wednesdays and Thursdays students spend 45 minutes using ST Math and then 15 minutes using one of the online reading content providers. For the reading block only, students are split into three tiers based on achievement: the tier of students needing the most help with reading use Imagine Learning, while the rest of the students use a combination of myON Reader and Raz-Kids.com.
