Fully-managed by Matchbook Learning, Merit Preparatory Charter School of Newark opened in the 2012-13 school year with 80 students in 6th grade. The school has grown a grade per year and will eventually serve more than 600 students in grades 6 through 12.

Model description
Students attend a brick-and-mortar location each day where they work on online courses in the core subjects four days a week (Mondays-Thursdays). Student schedules are individually customized during the last two hours of each day and on Fridays, based on student progress in the core subjects.
