School Description

Coronado Pathways Charter School is a comprehensive high school located in Coronado, Calif., that first opened its doors for the 2012–13 school year. The school offers the flexibility of online instruction with face-to-face academic support from site-based, credentialed teachers. The school’s focus is on designing and delivering a personalized education as well as addressing diverse learning preferences and contexts.

The Coronado Unified School District has always included an alternative option for at-risk high school students, but has not provided the flexibility in scheduling that would allow traditional university-bound students to take advantage of extra-curricular experiences during the school day and still meet the academic requirements for college admission. The district is also restricted in the number and types of classes it can offer because of limited capacity (seats) at Coronado High School.

The online school develops personalized educational plans for each student, offers a much wider variety of courses, and allows students to explore potential career paths through apprenticeships, internships, and service learning projects.

Model description
Families collaborate with staff to develop personalized educational plans, but all students are required to take part in face-to-face on-campus learning sessions with their teacher of record each day and the amount of time they are on campus each day varies based on the individual student’s learning plan.

Outside of the classroom, online learning is the primary medium of student learning as students progress through personalized learning plans remotely and at their own pace. In addition to core academic requirements for high school graduation and college preparation, each student has the opportunity to explore potential career paths and passions through not only online elective courses that are outside of the core curriculum but also internships, technical studies, visual and performing arts studies, and other career-related projects.
