Since the second half of the 20th century, global stakeholders have rallied to see an end to extreme poverty, investing their time and energy—and more than four trillion dollars—on anti-poverty programs. While some progress has certainly been made, particularly in places like China, the unfortunate reality is that many countries remain poor, with some even poorer than they were before receiving aid. In Africa, for instance, the number of people living in poverty is on the rise.

How can humankind explain that in today’s world—with all of our advances in technology, medicine, education, and collective experiences in nation building—billions of people still live in poverty? Undoubtedly it’s an exceedingly complex issue that intersects countless others, including healthcare, education, sanitation, water, corruption, and the environment.
